Here at the Muse, we always keep an eye out for interesting studies dealing with the creative mind. Those of us who find expression in the literary arts (and perhaps in the visual arts as well) are wired just a little differently than individuals who are not interested in artistic pursuits. We are continuously fascinated when we come across accredited research exploring the inner workings of creative people, especially writers.
In a study in 2009, Dr. Jane Piirto, who is an author and a Distinguished Professor Emerita at Ashland University (Ohio), identifies the psychological attributes inherent in many of us who have found that we have a talent for writing. Her study, titled “Personalities of Creative Writers,” lists and explores some of the traits that are obviously found in all creative individuals: imagination, insight, and motivation—the attributes initially needed to write that first poem or short story.
