We find ourselves in the midst of the holiday season, and even if you do not celebrate a particular holiday at this time of year, you can’t escape the decorations—homes, fences, and skyscrapers outlined in lights, ornament and light-laden trees and wreaths, sidewalks with garland-covered lamp posts, window displays in various businesses, etc. Whether you live in a small town or in a city, December, with all of its visual displays, is the perfect time to take a creative dive into psychogeography.
Psychogeography, in its simplest and most art-centered sense, is the exploration of urban (and “country”) environments with emphasis on our connections to places and routes, both on a personal level and on a collective level. For writers, artists, and photographers, this type of exploration is brimming with creative possibilities and inspiration for poems, essays, stories, and visual art/images.
