We are always on the lookout for courageous stories involving writing and literature. Recently, we came across an article about one woman’s efforts to speak up against the wave of book banning that is overtaking some counties in the US—affecting public libraries and school districts.
Grace Linn, a 100-year-old woman, who calls herself “a mother of liberty,” attended a meeting in late March that was held by the Martin County (Florida) School Board to discuss the banning of at least 80 books which had been removed from classrooms and public libraries due to a complaint filed by a parent.
The parent complained that the books were inappropriate because they contained sexual content, profanity, racial discussion, and/or anti-religious sentiments. At the meeting, several of the speakers requested that a committee be created to read the books and reconsider their removal.
